Artworks - Bert Harrison
Having trained at Birmingham College of Art and Birmingham University Bert Harrison lectured at several Art Colleges in the UK before becoming Principal of Epsom School of Art and Design until its amalgamation with Farnham School of Art to become eventually The University College for the Creative Arts. He was also a Director of the City & Guilds School of Art of London from 1998 to 2004.
His paintings are neither quite landscape nor seascape but areconcerned with the areas between the two where appearances are affected by wind, tide, rain, erosion, deposits, the workings of men and machines and the many manufactured signs and symbols with which they are punctuated. The worked surface of the paintings and the added found materials become a metaphor for the south coast landscapes.
The images are not specific as to time or place but are an amalgam of things seen, remembered and imagined. Their roots are firmly in the English tradition of landscape painting, but to quote Robert Hughes "Seek to find the unusual within the familiar".
Bert Harrison's paintings are in the Nuffield Collection, the American Embassy and private collections in the UK, France, Malta and the USA.
