Artworks - Paul Vanstone

Paul VanstonePaul Vanstone trained in sculpture at Central & St Martinís School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He was awarded the Darwin Scholarship (1990), Royal Academy of Art Travel Scholarship (1992) and the Henry Moore Award in 1991 and 1992. Following his graduation in 1993 Paul worked in Italy at the traditional marble carving studios near the famous Carrera quarries. He also spent time working in Berlin and travelled to Rajasthan to learn about their traditional religious, marble carving techniques. On returning to England Vanstone gained valuable experience working for five years as an assistant to Anish Kapoor. His fascination is with the hardness and light reflecting qualities of marble and how this can be transformed to portray the curvature of the human body and the delicacy and flow of covering cloth. Vanstoneís superb technique and his focus on quality and finish follow in the tradition of classical sculpture. However his images and influences reflect the 21st Century passion with the curvaceous architecture of Gehry and Hadid, together with continuing allure of the human form as portrayed by artists such as Moore. The distinctive sculptures that result are defining a new thread in contemporary art. Paul has held over 14 solo exhibitions and his work has featured in many group shows around the country including The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden and Asthall Manor Sculpture Exhibition. His commissions include Lord and Lady Carrington and Scadum Solicitors.
